The extension of the World Cup in 2022 to 48 countries is high on FIFA's agenda. On Friday, March 15, the world football association meets in Miami to weigh the pros and cons.

The advantage of a football tournament with more countries is of course more matches and higher income . The World Cup in 2026 will already consist of 48 countries.

By expanding the field of participants, both the pool phase and the knockout rounds will be changed. The groups will consist of 3 countries . Furthermore, a 16th final will be added. Up to 6 games are played per day.

The disadvantage of the expansion is the logistical challenge in the small host country. Most likely a neighbor will have to assist , but Qatar does not have a good relationship with the neighbors. In addition, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are concerned that human rights in the other country do not comply with FIFA guidelines themselves.

The official decision may be taken during the meeting in Paris on 5 June.
