FIFA increases the number of players in the World Cup squad from 23 to 26

The number of players that may be part of the squad for the 2022 World Cup has been expanded to 26. FIFA has decided this in response to the busy football calendar and the corona virus.
The original conditions stated that the squad could consist of a maximum of 23 football players. Since the next World Cup will be played in the winter, this puts extra pressure on the football calendar and the number of rest days for football players. The coronavirus also has an impact on the preparation for the tournament, as a result of which FIFA has decided to expand the squads.
- The maximum number of players in the preliminary squad has been increased from 35 to 55.
- The maximum number of players in the final roster has been increased to a minimum of 23 and a maximum of 26.
- The last day of competition and the deadline for submitting the final selection is November 13, 2022.
- No more than 26 people are allowed to sit on the bench during the game (15 substitutes and 11 assistants, including 1 team doctor).
