Host country Qatar is taking part in a friendly European qualification
Qatar will participate in the European qualifying matches towards the 2022 World Cup. In this way, the host country can prepare well for the tournament in its own country.
The World Cup will start in 2 years and in preparation Qatar will play friendly matches against the countries from group A.
Group A consists of Portugal, Serbia, Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan. Portugal has not reached the final of the Nations League, but is still in a smaller group of 5 countries. Qatar is added as the sixth country.
The matches against Qatar are friendly, so the points do not count towards the World Cup qualification. They do play against each other twice, probably on neutral ground.
Qatar is automatically seeded as the host country for the World Cup in 2022.
