The organization of the World Cup in Qatar has received the ICO 20121 certificate for the sustainability of the event. This is the first World Championship to receive the certificate.

ISO 20121 is an international standard that creates conditions for the development and implementation of a management system for delivering a sustainable event. The certificate was issued after an extensive audit process during the FIFA Arab Cup 2021.

Sustainability has been important to the organization from the start and is now recognized by an independent international organization. For example, SGS also assesses the Olympic Games and the French Open tennis tournament.

Sustainability means:

  • Accessible infrastructure for disabled people.
  • Minimize waste and recycling.
  • Sustainable procurement for goods, such as uniforms made from recycled materials.
  • Social and environmental audits of suppliers for the World Cup.
  • Reports of incidents during the event.

This recognition means that FIFA's Sustainability Strategy has paid off.
